Summary: From 27 to 31 October 2009, the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA - International Association of Lawyers) will welcome lawyers from around the world to Seville (Spain), where its 53rd congress will be held. |

The capital of Andalusia is at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, and offers an ideal setting for legal professionals to discuss their experiences and engage in intellectual debate.
Three main themes will be covered:
- The criminalization of business law
- Globalisation, tolerance and the law
- Attorney-Client privilege and Professional Confidentiality
Moreover, the UIA will offer a special session on the effects and issues of the financial crisis. This will be an opportunity to take stock of how law firms have been dealing with this crisis over the past year and to analyse the consequences for their clients’ businesses.
Specific meetings are also scheduled, including the first Forum for Africa, which will cover the role and independence of lawyers, as well as desertification.
Lastly, and as is the case each year, the UIA's forty commissions and working groups will also meet to discuss themes related to their business law specialisation, the general practice of law and human rights.
All the work, which will be organised by lawyers, representatives of bar associations and other experts of international renown, is accredited for lawyers' ongoing training and approved by the National Bar Councils of France (CNB), Belgium and Italy (Consiglio Nazionale Forense), and by the Romanian National Bar Associations Union (UNBR).
Over and above discussion and debate, this event provides an opportunity to develop productive professional contacts throughout the world, since more than 1,200 lawyers from around 70 countries are expected in Seville.
During the evening events and visits proposed by the UIA, the participants will have time to visit Seville, stroll on the banks of the Guadalquivir and sample the Spanish way of life.
