Summary: Spanish Justice Minister D. Francisco Caamaño Domínguez launched a series of events co-organised by the Spanish presidency of the EU and the Academy of European Law (ERA) at ERA’s annual reception yesterday (27 January 2010) in the Spanish Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels.

“It is not enough to have better laws, but it is indispensable to insure there is legal training”, said the Minister. Caamaño Domínguez chairs the Council of Justice Ministers during the six-month Spanish EU Presidency in the first half of 2010. It has become a tradition for the respective chairperson of the Council to speak at the Academy’s annual reception in Brussels. Spain has been a patron of ERA since 2001.
In cooperation with the Spanish presidency ERA is preparing two conferences to take place in March, one on “Procedural Safeguards in Criminal Law” and another on “ECJ Case Law and the National Tax Systems”.

The reception was also addressed by Manuel Medina Ortega, former MEP and chairman of the Friends of ERA Association. The Friends of ERA will organise a conference on “Intellectual Property and the Information Society in the EU” in Barcelona on 26 February 2010.

The Academy of European Law in Trier is a legal training centre and a forum for debate for lawyers throughout Europe. It is a public foundation which was established in 1992 on the initiative of the European Parliament.
